“Up Here in Maine” was Gerald E. Lewis‘ first book. It was printed by Pittsfield Publishers and has no copyright date, but the foreword was written by famous Maine author John Gould, and dated 1974. Illustrations were done by Roderick Slater.
The book contains 34 essays broken into four parts. The vast majority of these essays are about the Lewis family farm in Garland, Maine. I believe they may have been reprints from Lewis’ column entitled “Up Here in Maine” that ran weekly in the Bangor Daily News at the time. You can find old column entries by searching for “Up Here in Maine” in the Bangor Daily News Archives.
Up Here in Maine is a great book. The reader will learn to appreciate the refreshing, straightforward writing style Lewis used in these essays. Copies can still be found at a very reasonable price. If you enjoy the outdoors and farming in Maine or other rural areas, you’ll love reading “Up Here in Maine”.
