Ray Bergman (1891-1967) was an avid trout fisherman and fly tyer from New York State. From owning and working at sporting goods stores, tying flies commercially, and writing about fishing, Bergman loved fishing more than anything. He wrote well, and for a time was the fishing editor of Outdoor Life magazine. In addition to fishing in his home waters of New York, Bergman traveled a lot on his fishing ventures, and wrote about fishing in places all over the country. His most popular book, “Trout”, remained in print for more than 50 years and is one of the most popular fishing books ever published.
Ray Bergman books:
Trout
Just Fishing
Fresh Water Bass
With Fly, Plug and Bait
Jack Montague says
I guess I’m probably one of the very few people still alive to sit down at the vise with Ray. I was just a young teenager when I first met him and would sometimes spend some snowy January and February mornings with him. I was too young to drive them, so my parents would drive me to his house.
Nice old man he lived on South Mill Street in South Nyack, NY at the time. I later got my first police officer job in S. Nyack and worked with his niece’s husband Jack hawley on the P.D.
Ray was pretty much a recluse toward the end. I wish I still had the flies he gave me.
